Roof Financing: Too Good to Be True?

You know you need a new roof but maybe you’re not sure how to fund it. The cash in the bank won’t cover your insurance deductible, or perhaps it’s been set aside for another home improvement project. Nobody likes parting with cash, even for necessary repairs. Should you just wait and let the roof keep leaking, or bite the bullet and sign the dotted line? Here’s what you need to know about roof financing.

You Want to Boost Your Home’s Value

Roof financing is a budget-savvy way to improve your home’s value without breaking the piggy bank. Whether you’re ready to list your home for sale or simply want to increase your equity, a new roof is one of the best improvements you can make to your home.

You Need to Stay On Budget

Homeowners who are caught up on remodeling projects often get hit with last-minute expenses in the end. It can be difficult to stay on a track, especially when the unforeseen occurs. This leads to overspending and means you’ll eventually have to cut something from the budget. Since a roof is a necessity, you don’t want to put these repairs on the back-burner for long.

How to Clean Black Roof Algae Stains

Share It:

If your roof is looking a little shabby but is otherwise structurally sound, the black roof stained cosmetic problem that taunts you each time you turn in the drive might simply be algae. Algae won’t provide curb appeal unless you’re opting for a living roof. And even then, why would you grow this mossy plant?

Here is one thing you can do as a weekend warrior project to improve the appearance of your roof, boost your home’s curb appeal, and get your building ready for all of fall and winter’s seasonal decor. Whether you’re planning on selling your home or just perking up its appearance, this algae removal process is pretty swift and painless.

Removing Black Roof Algae Stains

Before you begin cleaning the black roof stains, opt for a professional roof inspection. Depending on your shingle’s manufacturer, they might come with a manufacturer’s limited algae-resistant guarantee. Owens-Corning offers StreakGuard algae resistant shingles that offer a 10-year limited warranty against all those mossy stains that make your roof any less than beautiful.

A free roof inspection from Heritage Construction will ensure your roof and shingles are performing as they should. If replacement is covered it’s best to go that route then put the work in to clean them yourself.

Stain-removal and the clearing of gutters are basic roof maintenance tasks that lend themselves in the do-it-yourself zone. So long as you know how to carefully climb upon the rooftop you can get rid of these eyesores all on your own. Here’s how.

Step By Step Algae Removal

Gloeoscapa magma is the most common form of blue algae that often lurks on roofs in hot and humid climates. If you have a light-shingled roof these black roof stains can easily and quickly make their appearance after the long, dog days of summer.

Out!  Black Spots!

Removing algae stains from your roof is pretty simple. You’ll need to formulate a 50% bleach to 50% water solution and get to town spraying your roof. Always protect your plants down below because flowers, bushes, and trees don’t like bleach very much. Protect your plantings by spraying them thoroughly with water first. This will lower the concentration of your cleansing solution, should it accidentally drip onto them.

Avoid using a power washer because the strength of the spray can cause shingle damage. Instead, opt for a handheld sprayer and apply the solution liberally, and then presto! (We all know what bleach does.) That roof is going to get clean. Spray thoroughly with a water hose to make sure all the algae runs off.

You can sweep the roof after it’s dry to brush off any additional debris.

Simple as that. So get your brooms ready. (It’s almost October.)

5 Truths About Storm Related Roof Insurance Claims

Share It:

Yes, it’s true. Storm-related damages (although you may not see them) worsen over time and will probably cause a roof leak later. This is what you need to know before filing an insurance claim for damages due to a storm. After all, that’s what roof insurance is for.

5 Things You Need to Know Before Filing a Claim

Filing a roof insurance claim is a complex process

Just like filing any type of insurance claim, there are complexities involved. Homeowner’s storm damage claims are filled with all the necessary steps to confirm reported damages caused by hail, wind, etc. This means an assessor adjuster (in-house or 3rd party) will be involved in the claim process to determine the cause and valuation of the loss, which in many cases can be due to poor roof maintenance. Heritage professionals are well-versed in the claims process and are able to assist from filing to completion of repairs.

Hail damage is not covered by your roof warranty

Although your new roof might carry a lifetime workmanship warranty, these warranties exclude hail and wind damage. If you contact your roofing company for damage resolution, you’ll more than likely be told to contact your insurance company.

Insurance companies can’t cancel your policy after filing a claim (UNLESS…)

Many people worry about filing a claim because they fear their policy will be canceled once the damage has been reported. Rest assured the State of Texas does have stipulations regarding policy cancellation. Here’s the fine black print:

Under the Consumer Bill of Rights adopted by the Texas Department of Insurance, homeowner’s insurance companies can’t cancel a policy that has been in effect for 60 days or more unless:

  • You fail to pay your premium on time
  • You filed a fraudulent claim
  • There is a determination by TDI that continuing the policy would violate insurance laws
  • There was an increase in the hazard your policy covers, provided the hazard was within your control and caused the policy premium to increase.

Full roof replacement isn’t guaranteed

Depending on your insurance company and policy, a full roof replacement may not be covered. Some companies will only repair the specific areas where damage has been detected. This is why it’s important to understand your policy and what it covers.

This can wait (But it can’t)

Sure, the process of filing a claim for roof damage isn’t exciting. It can be lengthy and detailed and it’s understandable if you’d rather shrug it all off till later. With most insurance companies you can only report damages up to one year after they’ve occurred if you’re seeking compensation. Spring and autumn are the ideal seasons to give your roof a well-check so you can discover damage before it’s too late.

Heritage Construction takes pride in being experienced insurance specialists. Book your free inspection today and rest assured we’re here after the storm. We’ll walk you through the claim process, and you’ll get everything you deserve from your insurance company. That’s the Heritage way.  Contact the pros today!
